ABS CyberSafety® Program
Providing a simple and scalable cybersecurity method.
High profile incidents and the potential for future incidents have led to an increased focus on cybersecurity within the marine and offshore industries. Industry stakeholders along with regulatory organizations are expecting owners to demonstrate that they have taken the necessary steps to protect their assets against cyber risks by controlling their vulnerabilities.
The ABS CyberSafety Method
The number of cyber threats and attacks are on the rise, increasing the focus on cybersecurity within the marine and offshore industries. In response, industry stakeholders are expecting owners to demonstrate that they have taken the necessary steps to protect their assets against cyber vulnerabilities.
The ABS CyberSafety team brings decades of maritime and high-tech manufacturing control system cybersecurity experience to developing the industry’s first practical guidance for establishing a cybersecurity plan that is scalable to the needs of your fleet.
The ABS CyberSafety method provides asset owners, operators, shipyards, equipment system suppliers and integrators with a clear and simple method for understanding, measuring and mitigating the risks inherent to cyber-enabled equipment.
CyberSafety Notations
The ABS Guide for Cybersecurity Implementation for Marine and Offshore Assets allows for vessels, which satisfy the established criteria outlined in the guide, to receive the following optional notations:
CS-READY
CS-READY indicates that vessels being outfitted with cyber-enabled systems are constructed and documented in accordance with the ABS Guide for Cybersecurity Implementation for the Marine and Offshore Industries in order to support more rapid completion of CS-1 requirements following delivery to the owner.
CS-SYSTEM
CS-SYSTEM indicates that the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) has developed, embedded, and described cybersecurity capabilities in the critical system submitted for notation and communicated unresolved potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities to the shipbuilder and owner.
CS-1
CS-1 indicates that cybersecurity risks have been identified onboard, and the necessary steps have been taken to implement the requirements within cybersecurity activities that address those risks.
CS-2
CS-2 indicates the extension of CS-1 cybersecurity activities with additional policies and procedures concerning cybersecurity system management and technical evolution – typically, this is needed for large fleets of vessels.
ABS CyberSafety Product Design Assessment (PDA) Certification
The ABS CyberSafety® Program helps equipment manufacturers identify and remedy system-specific cybersecurity vulnerabilities within risk management processes, governance, and the final system itself.
