What does CII mean for ship owners?

As of January 1st, 2023, ship owners are required to document their Attained Annual CII and verify it against the Required Annual CII to determine their vessel’s operational carbon intensity rating. 

Vessels receive a rating of A, B, C, D or E, indicating a major superior, minor superior, moderate, minor inferior, or inferior performance level for a vessel. 

A ship rated D for three (3) consecutive years or rated as E, will need to develop a plan of corrective actions.

 

 

 

Ship owners will also need to prepare the following as part of their SEEMP:

  • A description of the methodology to be used to calculate the ships Attained Annual Operational CII, and the process that will be used to report this value to the Administration;
  • The Required Annual Operational CII for the next three (3) years;
  • An implementation plan documenting how the Required Annual Operational CII will be achieved during the next three (3) years; and
  • A procedure for self-evaluation and improvement.

How can ABS assist?

ABS can assist ship owners with CII through our suite of sustainability solutions, including:

 

  • Benchmarking a vessel’s current CII to its required annual CII to help determine if improvements are needed
  • Investigating future CII projections by performing optional advanced profiling. This service leverages weather and routing data to establish the observed operating profile of the vessel. This enables realistic forecast of CII when considering operational or performance improvements, based on statistical models as derived from observed sailing conditions on vessel’s trading routes.
  • Support in SEEMP Part III development. Once we receive the results of the benchmarking and investigation, we will review them with you and discuss how they are to be used in SEEMP Part III development. At this time, you can also decide if you would like to proceed with a cost benefit analysis.
    • Vessel CII improvement options investigation with optional advanced profiling
  • Issuance of a Confirmation of Compliance (CoC) for SEEMP Part III and a Statement of Compliance (SoC) for the Attained CII
  • Monitoring a vessel’s CII rating on a regular basis through the ABS Emissions Reporter portal
