Permanent Means of Access (PMA) – Inspection and Maintenance
Within ABS, recent observations have highlighted how safety is driven through maintenance of the Permanent Means of Access (PMA) required on Oil Tankers and Bulk Carriers. These PMA walkways and ladders are used to facilitate surveys over the life of a vessel, and therefore should be examined regularly and maintained in good condition. This bulletin provides information addressing:
- the regulations and guidance documents related to Permanent Means of Access installations
- observations calling for a renewed focus on the maintenance of PMA installations
- the importance of taking PMA inspection and maintenance into consideration when implementing a vessel’s Safety Management System (SMS)
