The USCG Marine Safety Information Bulletin, March 6, 2017, updates its policy on granting BWM System extensions. The Bulletin advises that:
1.) Is available, the vessel will no longer be able to install AMS in lieu of type-approved systems. Therefore, when applying for an extension of the compliance date during which an AMS is being considered, the owner or operator should evaluate whether a USCG type approved system is available for the vessel;
2.) Is not available, an extension can be granted which means the AMS can be installed before, and used for up to five years after, the vessel’s compliance date.
Further information on the USCG’s assessment of an owner’s or operator’s selection of an AMS over a USCG approved BWMS is available through the Coast Guard Maritime Commons.
